Reddit Tests NFT Profile Picture Feature Similar to Twitter | How it Works

Social networking platform Reddit may soon offer its users the ability to use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as profile pictures, days after Twitter rolled out its new NFT profile picture verification feature.

Reddit NFT Profile Pictures Feature to Allows Users to Attach Verified Images

According to an interview with Techcrunch on January 26, Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt revealed how their platform, which has about 430 million monthly active users, is working on implementing NFT profile pictures for their users.

The feature will allow users to attach images based on verified, non-fungible tokens that the user purchased or owns.

Rathschmidt stated that they are constantly looking for ways to add value to users and the community on Reddit. For example, they are currently testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership. He added that this is a small internal test, and no decision has been made to expand or roll out the feature.

However, Nima Owji, an app developer not affiliated with Reddit, spotted a banner promoting the feature earlier this week, meaning it may already be semi-public.

By the way, Twitter added support for NFT profile pictures last week. However, like Reddit, Twitter tests the feature by limiting its availability to those who subscribe to Twitter Blue.

Reddit Involvement in Crypto

Reddit has previously done other crypto work. For example, in May 2020, the company introduced cryptocurrency tokens to its /r/cryptocurrency and /r/Fortnite communities. These tokens are called MOON and BRICK and are based on the Ethereum blockchain.

In June 2021, Reddit launched its line of NFTs called “CryptoSnoos” based on the company’s alien mascot.

Last October, the company posted a job posting stating it would be hiring to build a larger NFT platform. In November, various reports suggested that the company could switch its “Karma” system to an NFT-based system.

Reddit has about 430 million monthly users, which means these features can introduce NFTs to a wide audience.
