Merriam-Webster, the oldest publisher of dictionaries in the United States has carved out space for cryptocurrency in its lexicon.
The dictionary added a fresh batch of terms including “Altcoin,” “Metaverse,” and “Unbanked” to its lexicon in a nod to crypto.
The term altcoin is defined as any of the 20,000 cryptocurrencies in circulation “that are regarded as alternatives to established cryptocurrencies and especially to Bitcoin.” Metaverse, another popular term in the world of crypto is defined as ”A persistent virtual environment that allows access to and interoperability of multiple individual virtual realities.’‘
Merriam-Webster gave ”Meatspace” as the opposite of Metaverse which is defined as ”The physical world and environment, especially as contrasted with the virtual world of cyberspace”.
Several other financial terms have been included in the September list of addition. Some words coined on Crypto Twitter were added which include unbanked” and “underbanked”. These terms refer to individuals who have no or limited access to banking services.
Other latest financial terms to look out for in the dictionary include ”shrinkflation”, ”use case”, and so on.
