Twitter’s recent purchase of 10,000 GPUs seems to signal its entry into the generative AI boom.
The purchase comes as Elon Musk, Twitter owner, has been critical of OpenAI’s level of transparency, calling it a “ruthless corporate monopoly”.
It’s unclear what Twitter will use the GPUs for, but it was reported in February that Musk is looking to create an AI chatbot that will rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
This runs counter to what Musk preached in March when he signed an open letter calling for a pause on AI development to consider the ramifications of LLMs.
Linkedin co-founder Reid Hoffman suggested that the letter was an attempt to get industry leaders like OpenAI to “slow down” so they can speed up.
Musk has some bittersweet history with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Twitter’s purchase of those GPUs would definitely reflect an acceleration in AI investment and is likely to cost millions of dollars.
